6 Investigates: What to know if your car dealership is causing title troubles

well six investigates story earlier this week revealed that a local car dealership is under investigation for selling cars and then failing to transfer the titles on them that’s left dozens of people driving a car they don’t know investigative reporter Jessica savage spoke with experts about what you can do should this happen to you since our story aired Monday we’ve received a flood of emails calls and messages from people in a tough situation I spoke with a woman earlier today who has paid about ten thousand dollars on a car she doesn’t own Angela Clifton bought this used subaru forrester about a year ago and during that time she’s been driving on temporary license plates like this one which expired last month Clifton says the dealership still hasn’t turned in the title transfer paperwork we explained her situation to local tax assessor collector Kevin quiche Nick he handles car title transfers in Oasis County he says your options are limited the dealership can apply for a 30 day temporary permit from his office and if that doesn’t work you can apply for what’s called a bonded title that requires you to buy an insurance bond through a company or cash nick says hire an attorney the thought of like hiring an attorney or buying this bond I mean that seems pretty hopeless for people I mean unfortunately it is and these dealerships need to really take ownership of this and do what they’re required to do it’s illegal and transfer a vehicle without a title as for Clifton she’s going to fight for the car but it’s left her apprehensive about her next car purchase we want to point out that a dealership has 30 calendar days from the sale date to send the title paperwork to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles or 45 days if the dealership financed the car if done correctly your new license plates should arrive before your temporary plates expire we have more information about how to file a complaint with the DMV on our website that’s Cris tv.com all you have to do is look for this story
