9-year-old says friend pulled gun out on school bus

IMENT FROM FROM THE STATION ON YOUR SIDE. YOU’RE WATCHING WAVY NEWS 10 AT 6:00. CHRIS: BACK WITH WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A HORRIFYING SITUATION INVOLVING YOUNG CHILDREN. ANITA: THIS CASE, A BOY BRINGING A GUN TO SCHOOL. WE TALKED TO YOU ABOUT THE INCIDENT AT GEORGETOWN PRIMARY IN CHESAPEAKE. THE BOY WAS 8 YEARS OLD BUT WHAT A CLASSMATE DID ONCE HE GOT HOME MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. JASON: WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT STORY HAD THAT GUN BEEN LOADED. WE’RE TOLD THE GUN SURFACED ON THE BUS AND SEVERAL BOYS WERE POINTING IT AT EACH OTHER, PULLING THE TRIGGER. AFTER SCHOOL, 9-YEAR-OLD ELIJAH MYERS IS FOCUSED ON PERFECTING HIS SWING. IT HELPS ME HIT THE BASEBALL IN THE GAMES. JASON: BUT FRIDAY ON THE SCHOOL BUS HOME, BASEBALL WAS THE LAST THING ON HIS MIND. HE BROUGHT A GUN ON THE BUS, WAY HOME. SHOWED IT TO A LITTLE KID AND THEN ME. JASON: THE BUS WAS COMING FROM GEORGETOWN PRIMARY IN CHESAPEAKE. ELIJAH SAYS THE GUN WAS PASSED AROUND BETWEEN THE BOYS, POINTING IT AT EACH OTHER AND PULLING THE TRIGGER. MY SON GAVE IT TO ME AND HE SAY TO ME, POINT IT AT HIM, THAT SHOULD HAVE NOT DID SO THEN I PULLED THE TRIGGER AND IT CLICKED. JASON: FORTUNATELY, THE GUN WAS UNLOADED. ONCE HOME — IT’S VERY, VERY CONCERNING. ELIJAH TOLD HIS MOTHER WHAT HAPPENED. I’M VERY THANKFUL THAT THIS GUN WAS NOT LOADED, THAT NO CHILD WAS HARMED. JASON: CHESAPEAKE POLICE SAY THE BOY WHO HAD THE GUN IS 8. WE HAVEN’T BEEN TOLD WHERE THE GUN CAME FROM. I WONDER HOW IT DID GET INTO HIS HANDS. JASON: MYERS SAYS SHE HAS GUNS LOCKED AWAY AT HOME AND HAS TALKED TO ELIJAH ABOUT THE DANGERS. SHE CAN’T BELIEVE HE PUT HIS HANDS ON IT. I REALLY DON’T THINK AT THAT AGE, IN THEIR MIND AND EVERYTHING, THAT THEY REALLY FULLY UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF WHAT A GUN — IT’S BYE-BYE FOR LIFE. JASON: ELIJAH SAYS HE’S LEARNED HIS LESSON, A LESSON HE PLANS TO SHARE WITH HIS CLASSMATES. I SHOULDN’T TOUCH THE GUN. MY MOM LEARNED ME TO NOT TOUCH THE GUN BUT I DIDN’T FOLLOW THE RULES. JASON: WE ASKED SCHOOL OFFICIALS ABOUT THE INCIDENT BUT THEY GAVE US VERY LITTLE INFORMATION. THEY WOULDN’T TELL US IF THE 9-YEAR-OLD FACES ANY PUNISHMENT BUT ELIJAH TOLD ME TODAY THAT THE BOY WAS NOT IN CLASS.
