PATROLS ALL WEEKEND LONG. LAST MEMORIAL DAY, TROOPERS ARRESTED 237 PEOPLE FOR DRUNK DRIVING, ISSUED MORE THAN 13- THOUSAND TICKETS , AND INVESTIGATED 154 CRASHES, WHICH RESULTED IN EIGHT DEATHS. ROD: UNLOCKED VEHICLES WITH KEY FOBS LEFT INSIDE THE CAR. THIEVES ARE TARGETING VEHICLES THAT ARE EASY TO STEAL, AND NOT JUST FOR JOY RIDES. CHRISTIE: CICERO POLICE SAY THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR FOR CAR OWNERS TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THIEVES WHO ARE STEALING CARS — TO COMMIT OTHER CRIMES. CHRISTIE: SUMMERTIME…AND THE STEALING CAN BE EASY FOR CAR THIEVES IN THE SUBURBS. Cicero Police Officer Ashley Smith: We have a high risk of vehicle larcenies. We’re seeing them in the neighborhoods, but we’re also seeing them at local fire departments, as well as local dealerships in the area.” CHRISTIE: THAT’S RIGHT. THIEVES ARE SNEAKING NEW CARS OFF DEALERSHIP LOTS.IN THE PAST MONTH, CICERO POLICE SAY AT LEAST FOUR CARS WERE STOLEN FROM FOUR DEALERSHIPS IN CENTRAL NEW YORK AND THE SOUTHERN TIER. WHILE POLICE TRY TO FIGURE OUT IF IT’S AN ORGANIZED RING AT WORK, WE CAN DO OUR PART TO MAKE OUR OWN VEHICLES LESS ATTRACTIVE TO THIEVES EAGER TO FIND A GETAWAY CAR. Officer Ashley Smith: “This is an easy way for a criminal to get a vehicle, a mode of transportation they can use for a short period of time, commit a crime and dump said vehicle at a separate location.” Officer Ashley Smith: “Whether they are walking around, checking doors to see if they’re unlocked, checking to see if keys are inside the vehicles, checking garages to see if the vehicles are secure in there, that’s why they are doing, and how they are taking vehicles.” CHRISTIE: THE OTHER TROUBLING TREND? LICENSE PLATES ARE BEING STOLEN TOO. SO REMEMBER THIS IF YOU’RE ABOUT TO REPLACE THAT PEELING PLATE.
