Changing Your Tire? You’re Doing It Wrong

rev up your engines today I’m going to
show you what not to do when changing a flat tire you don’t want to damage
anything you want to do it right here’s mistakes that people make that
you shouldn’t do don’t just start by jacking it up in the air you want to
remove the hubcap but has any then just loosen each lug nut now you
want to do this with the car on level surface on the ground because if you
jack it up in here when you try to loosen them it’ll just keep spinning
around so loosen each one just a little one it’s not gonna hurt anything just
loose them a bit with them on the ground then before you Jack it up make sure the
car is in park to end the emergency brake is on tight so the car doesn’t
roll and of course do this on flat level solid ground if you’re in a muddy area
just drive slowly with the flat tire till you get to a flat surface that’s
strong I’ve seen guys Jack them up in the mud and they just sink back down
into the ground if you get the tire off and then it sinks in the ground you
can’t get the other one back on so you want solid level ground you’re doing
this on if you got to drive a little while big deal drive it don’t try to do
it on a hilly area works at a big angle or where there’s mud or even a whole
bunch of gravel you want to go where there’s solid ground when it comes to
Jack it up know where your jack points are in this case there’s two not just
one here and one here you pick the jack got pushed down would
come in between the two notches as you can see here it fits right between the
two notches so you can jack it up then you tighten the valve and start jacking
just do it a little bit at a time and remember the toy is flat so you want
to get it way up in the air otherwise when you put the new tire on
it won’t fit cuz it’s not higher so it’s better to jack it up a little bit higher
but it’s a bit too low now as you can see it easily comes off to nothing job
once you already have the things loose sometimes you gotta kick them cause
they’re old get them off and there we go and look now the charge magically not flat anymore it’s only flat on the bottom on the weight
side we got the other tire onto the trunk and put it on and get your dirty old
spar in the trunk and before you go any further check the air pressure
I checked mine all the time so it’s got 32 psi that’s fine
and you roll the tire on and line up the holes they only go one way and put them on
finger tight the wiggle a little to get them on real tight I’m gonna spray a
little wd-40 on this one all cars like this that it rusty spray a little in the nut and some on the bolt then you can use your socket you can get
a little more turning pressure there that started it now once they’re
all snugged up get your socket so they’re snug all of them there’s the last one then we’ll let the jack down down it goes we’re not done yet
now we’re gonna get them super tight then on the ground with a brake on so
nothing I’m moving I will never come on we’ll just do them all and check
just to make sure yeah nothing so now you know how to correctly change your
tire and it’ll go down the road the wheel won’t fall off and you won’t
injure yourself doing a job anybody can do it just as long as they know what not
to do like I just shown, so if you never want to miss another one of my new car

  2. INCORRECT statement 'The wheels only go on one way.'.
    I was once left to put all 4 wheels back on a military Landover. I put the wheels on inside out. It made the LR look super mean. The Sargent wasn't so impressed.

Thanks, Scotty: important procedures at times (;ps I check my spare location, dropping down ((GMC CANYON, & DODGE locations storageJOURNEY) to ground & Removal, Psi ( my Dodge was <15 LB AFTER THREE YEARS spare pressure), jack location on Body and storage, etc. Fortunately I buy AAA, WHICH NEVER USED, and here in East Helena MT many areas have no Phone Service, etc. ..

  5. Hey Scotty you didn't torque the lugnuts to 76 ft lbs. If they are on too tight they can warp the rotors or drums and make it impossible to temove after they have been on for awhile.

Tire should be off the ground, torque wrenched to factory specs, never use lubricant you will over torque (aka stretch) and later snap studs , and also star cross pattern tightening, I'm Anal and use star cross pattern for Removal also, but then that's my car my time my problem, none of yours😏

  7. I guess I’m spoiled, I use a large scissor jack and a 1/2 inch impact gun. Changing a tire is a breeze as long as I have the impact

  8. For floor jacks like that also look under the car for the beam running the length of the car, or find a solid steel flat area, like suspension mounting points, for a good jacking point. Those pinch welds are usually for the tire jack.

  9. Scotty. Another great video but I noticed you have water in your rear indicator light. Do a video on why that happens and sorting it?

  10. I always put the spare tyre under the car & lay it flat next to the jack until I have the flat tyre off. Then I put the flat tyre under the car next to the jack while I put the spare tyre on. If the car comes off the jack then it will land on the tyre & hopefully do less damage

  11. And most importantly, check your owners manual for the lug nut torque specs and tighten exactly with a calibrated torque wrench. After 100 miles, do it again. If you don't, you risk losing your wheel or worse.

  13. I first take the spare out of the trunk. After jacking up the car, I place the spare just underneath the chassis, right by the jack as a safety precaution. Changing the tire, I quickly replace the tire on the axles and put the flat one in place of the spare under the chassis, until the lug nuts are on and lightly snugged up.

  14. You forgot the most important part. Anti seize compound on the hub will prevent having to use a sledgehammer to remove the tire. And using it on the lug bolts will prevent them from being broken when torquing or removing, and helps prevent them from coming loose if not properly torqued. Also, using a socket in the drill with the factory scissor jack is about 20 times faster.

  15. Remember to rotate the air in your tires. Make sure you don't have winter air in the tires during summer. Scotty vids are always good

  16. I torque mine to spec. I guess not everyone has a torque wrench and in a pinch it's better to be a little tight than lose

  17. Is it necessary to drive the car a few miles (kilometers) and tighten once more? I have found that the lugs nuts, while not loose, were able to be tightened a bit after driving.

  18. Scotty when I started doing my car brakes I used to use breaker bar and stand on it to tighten ,that broke most of my lug nuts after multiple times….tourqe should be 77 by using a tourqe bar

  21. Pro Tip; it's easier to pull up on the pry bar than it is to push it sideways or down, you end up using your entire body when pulling up 😉

  22. One thing I know about torque, if it says to use oil then you use oil and torque it to spec. if its intended to be dry, you torque it to spec dry. I have put grease on bolts for the front rotors on my honda motorcycle and snapped them. those lugnuts need to be dry. and one thing tire shops do that irritates me is blindly buzz them on with a pnumatic impact gun and when you want to get them off you have to stand and jump on the friggen breaker bar.

  23. Lubricating wheel stud threads or lug bolt threads is generally not a good idea. It changes the torque load when you tighten the nuts, and can result in unintentionally getting the nuts too tight. Better to clean the threads with a small brass or steel brush, then assemble. If you have to lubricate, do as Scotty did, and use WD-40, because unlike oil or grease, it evaporates. That star pattern for tightening, which Scotty talks about, is essential, especially on disc brakes.

  24. Try showing how to use the jack that came with the car, not a bought one. Not helpfull. Wd40 ? Really ? You also did not mention getting the lug bolts or nuts torqued properly as soon as possible. Jeez.

  25. @Scotty Kilmer I have heard that if you over tighten a wheel with disk brakes, then you risk warping the rotors. Is this true?

  26. Yep, you did it wrong. These nuts have a torque spec and you should use a torque wrench to the proper value, not just oofta-snug. Failing that, you should use counter torque on the wrench to prevent galling the threads.

    Other than that, cool video.

  27. Dang… A video about what NOT to do, and he doesnt mention USING JACK STANDS. Those tiny trolley jacks suck. Every single one I've seen has failed. Scissor jacks are even worse. DO NOT rely on them alone, unless you dont care about your limbs…

    He also doesnt mention the importance of torquing down the lug nuts. A torque wrench costs $10 at Harbor Freight… Ive seen them go for $5 at Aldi….

  28. Wow I can't believe scotty did it wrong. Never ever lubricate or oil the nuts or studs and did not use a torque wrench to tighten.

  29. I always tried to just let the car down enough to put enough weight on the tire to allow the lug nuts to be fully tightened before the full weight of the vehicle is on the tire. That's the way my dad showed me over 40 years ago. Surprising how many people can't change a tire when they get a flat these days. They should at least know how but it is a dirty job. I would also recommend that you keep some clean rags and hand wipes in your vehicle to clean your hands when you are done. Just some other tips!

  31. Scotty, if the parking brake only locks the rear end, jacking up the rear end won't do much good to stop the car!

    Wheel chocks should go on the front! GM full size trucks and SUVs (and maybe their others, I don't know) come with stamped steel wheel chocks in the spare tire tool kit.

    If your car doesn't come with chocks, I recommend throwing a small set under a back seat or in the trunk.

  32. I prefer to torque to specs. Other than that, good video. The one caveat that would invalidate loosening the lug nuts before jacking the car is of course an impact wrench.
