STANDUP: Joe Vazquez / Fremont The fire could be seen from miles all around this industrial area of Fremont … Firefighters say high winds and warm temperatures caused it to quickly spread. TRACK: It’s an unusual sight … dozens of cars swallowed up by flames all at once. The fire started around 4:30. Insurance Auto Auctions was closed for business. The Fremont Fire division chief says one lone security guard was on duty, but it took him awhile to realize what happened on the large lot. Div. Chief Doug McKelvey / Fremont Fire Dept. SOT: One of the cars apparently got started on fire … in the center of a bunch of cars … and because of the wind and it’s unattended … it rapidly spread to about 30 to 40 cars. NATS: electrical fence all the way around … can’t cut it. TRACK: Firefighters struggled to get inside the property because of an electrical fence … The lot is several city blocks from Stevenson Boulevard, so firefighters had to connect 1800 feet of large diameter hose to get water to reach the flames. Insurance Auto Auctions resells vehicles that were taken over by insurance companies. Many of these cars were considered “totaled” but may still be drivable. In some cases, they were repossessed. SOT: The challenge now is it’s 30 or 40 car fires and you know, one single car fire takes a lot of water to get in there and fully extinguish. Now, we’ve got 30 of them … all stacked close together.
