Here’s Why Car Review Channels are Full of Crap

Here’s Why Car Review Channels are Full of Crap

rev up your engines, people are always
asking me what kind of car should they buy and what should they avoid I help
them out with an honest opinion there are a bunch of people out there giving
such honest opinions on stuff yet people are probably following their advice so
I’m gonna warn you not to listen to a lot of them first of all what
credentials do they have I do they have ulterior motives me I’ve been fixing
cars for 51 years am i selling you something no I’m just giving out information
now you take journalists a lot of people read stuff like Motor Trend Car and
Driver that kind of stuff well I tend to take all that stuff with a large grain of
salt for example 2016 Motor Trend named the
Chevy Camaro Car of the Year they’re not even gonna be making Camaros after 2023
they’re gonna shove them in anybody who knows the quality or lack thereof of GM
vehicles would never pick a Chevy Camaro as the car of the year in 2016 there’s a
world of cars out there oh you could pick that as being the car of the year
it certainly seems like there’s uh a little underhandedness going on here
give me another example years ago I went to a Grand Prix race was sponsored by
all kinds of different stuff I was interviewed by this Mexican gentleman
who did Internet car reviews and he did it by language so he interviewed me big
mistake on his behalf they started out saying well Scotty
since all cars are so well made today and don’t break how can you make a
decision on which one to buy so I kind of glared at him and said are you
kidding me I said what about Jaguar Land Rover those things fall apart don’t tell
me they’re well made now he wasn’t a mechanic of course he was a journalist
so he can tell you how to interview me I doubt if any of it aired and after the
area’s over I said well where are you going next week and he said that well
Land Rover was flying them to like Finland and they’re gonna unveil the new
all-wheel-drive Range Rover free hotel champagne you name it do you
really think these people are gonna give you honest reviews of anything if
they’re like me and told you the truth about half the stuff they would never
have any cars left to review the companies would never fight them to any
of these things anymore hey it’s happened to me in the past I used to go
to these dog and pony shows I would always ask incisive questions
when everybody was gone I laid back and then went up to the engineers and asked
him questions so when I said okay does the racing gas contain any ethanol he
said no I said well the ones at the pump had 10% ethanol so right off the bat it
can’t be 99% the same because 10% of the other ones ethanol you don’t have any
so he just smiled I said what you’re going by ingredients but not percentage
of ingredients huh and he smiled again so I said okay I’m gonna play devil’s advocate
so let’s say I got a can of coke here I put one drop of your racing fuel in it
then you can say that that racing fuel is 99% the same just because it’s coke
with one drop of gas and he said well if you go by the ingredients and not the
percentage of the ingredients yes you can say that so a lot of it smoking
mirrors I remember when I once I was at the Indianapolis 500 I was talking to
the competitors who had sent me there the competitors were Mobil 1 and the
Mobil 1 guy says don’t tell me those guys are telling you it’s the same oil
that we using the races they use in cars and even he had Mobil 1 admitted he said
our oils different that we’re using the race cars enemy but it’s a PR game the
guys play now needless to say I never get reinvented by these companies to
come back because they don’t like someone asking incisive questions
sometimes they don’t even allow you to ask questions but I always find a way to
ask real questions from the real engineers so when you see a bunch of
journalists or other car talk guys all meeting together somewhere I take with a
big giant grain of salt anything that they’re telling you about just about
anything from cars to car products especially when they have to say this
was sponsored by blah blah blah now don’t get me wrong I really like talking
to the engineers the people are designed and tossed off I find it fascinating but
most of these companies they don’t allow people they ask
really incisive questions they put on a dog and pony show for the people who
merrily go along eating and drinking and being entertained then maybe giving away
freebies to people you know free gasoline vouchers whatever you know it’s
a PR scam for the corporations it’s not real information let’s face it if you’re
going to spend a ton of money on a car you want it to last as long as possible
to have the least maintenance possible and to hold up over years and years so
you get your money’s worth which of course is going against the planned
obsolescence theory that modern capitalism is into so these corporations
are trying to make something that’s planned obsolescence and you want to buy
something that isn’t so don’t think they’re not gonna pay people to say how
great things are they may not be so great no I love talking to engineers who
design stuff come up with interesting ideas they’re still set somewhere unless
they’re an independent engineer and aren’t too many of them they’re working
for corporation corporation pretty much tells them how much they want to spend
what they want to design and they got to build it within those specifications
take that newer infinity variable compression engine that has different
compression ratios crank shafts and piston rods with cantilever systems so
the actual compression ratio inside the cylinders can be modified as you’re
driving brilliant engineering feat buy really infinity is owned by Nissan they’re not
known for making things that hold up over time anymore
so you buy some complex design like that it can easily fall apart and you’re
stuck with paying the bill now of course the engineers will often count the stuff
yeah it’s great for them because they design that keeps them in a job but hey
there are mechanics they’re not actually going out and fixing these things and
seeing how they break down how expensive they are or how unreliable they are so
you really can’t believe what a lot of those people gonna be telling you and
when it comes to people that are doing car reviews on cars if they’re not a
mechanic that’s been doing it for quite some time they have no idea what lasts
what doesn’t last you know they’re in the same boat as any journalist if they
keep knocking a particular type then that company’s no longer gonna give them
cars to review don’t just say oh that guy thinks our cars stink so we’ll never
invite him again I was skimming through the internet the other day
I found a car site and a hand reviews of 12 different cars and they were all
glowing reviews didn’t say anything bad about any of them you know I mean you
can tell that’s tough it’s just being either paid for or they’re just
lavishing praise and hope that they’ll get paid later on now unless you’re
going by pur cosmetics when you buy a car how it looks and all little dials
and heads and all the electronic crap that it can do that’s not a review you
want to put any faith in when you want to buy a car it’s going to last a long time
and not bankrupt you in repairs when it gets to have a hundred thousand miles
there be six seven years old now I have to say I’m in kind of a unique position
here I’ve gotten almost 700 million YouTube views telling people the truth
about cars because people want to hear the truth I tell them the truth I don’t
have to take sponsors paying me money to pay my bills I can be honest a rarity
you somebody can actually tell the truth to people I make money at the same time
and I’m believing that crap anyways I think we’re here to help people out
don’t get involved in selling a bunch of crap to people just because you’re
getting paid on the back end we’re talking about a huge chunk of your money
buying a car you don’t want to waste that money get the wrong vehicle because
you take advice from somebody who’s either on a paola line or just flat
doesn’t know what the heck they’re talking about take what people say on
the internet and in print and on TV with a large grain of salt when they’re
talking about what car you should buy and how good certain models are so if
you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos, remember to ring
that Bell

  2. She: are you watching another one of his videos?
Me: yes honey, just discovered this mechanic…need to see all videos, I’m hooked…he’s good!

  3. SCOTT I HAVE A QUESTION, IS THE 2015 QX60 GOOD CAR (HAS 49MIL)??? IM LOOKING ON BUYING A CAR WITH 3RD ROW AND SEW IT FOR SELL ETC…I HAVE AT THE MEANTIME THE 2006 FORD EDDIE BOWER WITH 95MIL. OK HOPE I CAN HEAR FROM YOU SOON & KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. THANK YOU!

  4. You all miss the point of car of the year, and new car review praises. Its based of the potential it could be, and the tech and design they bring forth to the market. Not for reliability and how long they last (Ps, it wouldnt be a NEW car if they had those answers) You want used car reviews, you go to sites like edmonds or Consumer Reports, Not to a Toyota Bias back yard mechanic, whom btw only seems to like and approve cars of several decades ago.

  5. "The truth is expensive, so don't expect truth from cheap people". You sir, are not cheap and I appreciate your videos tremendously. Thank you.

  6. Your the best Scotty. I gave up my gas station in 1981, (we're the same age), and I couldn't agree with you more and I tell my wife and everyone else exactly the same thing. ALL CARS ARE NOTHING BUT OVERPRICED ELECTRONIC POS'S. Back then I was telling my customers when they asked what to buy, I fwas frank and told them to either get a Toyota or a Honda. Writing was on the wall back then already. Thank you for your contribution and time to inform the sheeple.

  7. What about Consumer Reports Car Ratings ??    They're claiming to Not be affected by anything or anyone …..    They've been pretty accurate ….

  8. Where do people ask Scotty a question about a car purchase? I got a deal here in Europe for a '96 Chrysler Stratus LX 2.5 with only 39 000 miles for $3 000. Looks very much like brand new, except the exhaust which seems to me as 3rd party one. A 39k miles average daily car with a ricer exhaust end? Anyways, what do you think about these Status 2.5s? Even this 3 grand is kinda over my budget

  9. I agree with what Scotty is saying for the most part. However everyone’s priority isn’t long lasting reliability. I know Toyota’s are reliable but I wouldn’t buy one with someone else’s money because they bore me to death.

  10. Have a question Scotty is 2005 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas a good b reliable car to purchase with 60k miles. Pls help me out, had owned in the past a week 2000 Jaguar XJ8 L n 2004 XJ8 both after buying n using got transmission problems n got it fixed. Love this cars but lil hesitated this time.

  11. Back in the late 60's early 70's Shell advertised that X100 Motor oil was used in the Ferrari race team. I was with a race team at Sebring and passed by the back of the Ferrari pits and saw X100 empties in a garbage can. I smelled a familiar smell and picked up an empty out of the garbage and it smelled like castor oil. The team I was with used Castrol "R "which was castor oil so I was aware of what castor oil smelled like. Also in those days Gulf oil was supplying AV gas for our fuel.

  12. I never asked a question before* scotty…i have an 02 si. Im grabbing hondata this week. I wanna replace all my fuel lines(the whole system) what do you honestly think the affects of e85 will be?

  13. Man it just hit me,

    Does anyone know boarderland game,

    Scooter mechanic character?

Is it a reference to scotty?

    You should sue them 🤣🤣🤣🤣

  14. The manufacturing process of an automobile has begun in the same way for decades. They place a "Heater Core" on the assembly line and build a car around it! Right Scotty?

  15. Hey Scotty I bought a 2008 Suburu Impreza that needed a new head gasket. I got that fixed and it seems to be running fine but I am the 5th owner so I’m pretty paranoid. Why do you think so many people bought and sold my car?? I don’t get it, I’m scared.

  16. Scotty thanks for your honest comments
In Land rover discovery 4 xs 2013 model a good car to buy and keep for long

  17. Scotty I generally agree with you, but so many more people lease cars than ever before as opposed to buying. I only buy used, but seems like that segment of the car buying population keeps shrinking. There’s no incentive for manufacturers to make long lasting products because turnover happens much more frequently than it used to. People just don’t keep cars as long as they used to.

  18. So after driving pre-production for 4 years I gave up.
I guess they can't make vehicles that are quiet comfortable, because apparently that does not sell any more.
But they make do with ROVs that have more HP than a 1969 Corvette. ROV? = roll over vehicle.
One of the female engineers got all in my case because I wrote this. "Clearly this car was made for a size 6, 5' 4" female that will never drive 300 miles one day like I just did."
Then I showed her the marketing target statement in the vehicle's binder.
Of course when the the vehicle is released for the press. I am really impressed by how quickly all of those faults have disappeared in those reviews.
After driving a Navigator or a Cherokee, I would turn the keys in and say now I am going take a ride in a good car.
A Trailblazer may be a nightmare to fix but even with 200,000 miles it is still better than any 2020, except for one thing the Navigreator or the Chairokee is better at, gas mileage.
Even the T-blazer amazes me with absurdity in it's engineering execution. Clearly the all engineering departments think a spud wrench is used on potatoes.
They are not getting better just more expensive.

  19. I am in the market for a new truck. It will be a Toyota. I have been watching over 40hrs of videos. There are two things ALL reviewers do. First, they shove their face into the camera and talk. Like that is interesting. The second thing they do is to never mention anything wrong or has been wrong. They will sometimes hide a drawback such as a tailgate that slams down. They use their hand to hold the tailgate as it drops so you don't realize the tailgate just slams down. Another reviewer ignored the one problem with a 4Runner. The trailer connections are under the bumper. Hard to get to, but this reviewer didn't even mention the trailer connectors. They simply regurgitate what the manufacturers publish about their vehicles. They also seem to say the same thing in the same way. Every reviewer of a Toyota must mention the trucks are old school. Everyone says that. Why are 99% of these people just speaking for the manufacturers? Why is this the norm rather than the exception? So, once again, we consumers loose chances to really learn about the vehicle we want to buy. That makes these reviewers dangerous to consumers who want to purchase a dependable and capable vehicle. I'm sick of them all. There are some exceptions of course but it's usually a private owner that tells the truth.

  20. I like how he’s telling a coherent story while the background keeps flipping back and forth lol!

Also this is pretty good content 👌

  21. Over engineered and over priced. I worked at a car repair shop for a bit, mostly Audi, Porsche, Mercedes etc. Talk about overpriced, over engineered junk. Nice when new but NO. Never again. I had a 535i Break my wallet. "Had" is the optimal word.

  22. well, imagine what would happen the the global economy if cars were built to last 20 years plus????
garbage keeps the world working even Scotty

  23. Just depends on what we’re talking about. For normal people yes this is an issue. But a rich person doesn’t give two shits about a Range Rover not being able to last 200k miles.

  24. That's what I always thought…most car reviews are all about design, driving dynamics, competitor comparions and practically. Never about reliability and longevity of the car which is what I'm usually looking for it I were to buy a car.

  25. Everything he is saying is spot on about the big corporations, P.R., marketing poeple. Bottom line is………….? The $! Buy and drive whatever you like and want to drive. It's your money!

  26. Scotty, you are #1 in my book because you talk VALUE – reliability, service, convenience and you're HONEST!
Almost ALL others with vehicle review channels act like little kids! TOYS! TOYS! TOYS!

  27. Long term reliability is mostly overlooked that’s true. But the truth is that most car people go after: style, fun, passion, driving experience. A great car can also be terribly unreliable…

  28. I watch hoovies garage and laugh at some of the money pits he buys lol
    Cheap mercedes benz wagon
Every time he fixes it it breaks down lol

  29. As an engineer I'd like to ask a Toyota engineer what specs they get to design and a Chrysler engineer the same thing so I can compare. Things like their budget per system, purchasing, and their factor of safety used when doing stress analysis. I still wonder the details of why Toyota gets it right and we don't. Outside of new creative systems engineering is clear cut and there is no reason for componets and systems to fail. My guess is Chrysler over engineers the cheapest materials to make pennies squeak. It is clearly a profitability vs. reliabilty thing and I think only some companies have figured out how to do both at the same time while others are surviving off of the guliable buyers. Anyone of these companies could make a super long lasting reliable vehicle, hell they could engineer a passenger car to last a million miles easily, anyone of them, but that is simply not profitable. They'd rather cut corners, gain profit, and have you not keep that car for too long.

  30. Scotty, you sound like me. We know which car companies are good and bad. Chrysler-Fiat, Mercedes, Nissan, most GM products and British cars are blech!!! My neighbor just bought a new I-Pace, and sheesh, I told him good luck. By the way, it went to the dealer 3 times for computer problems.

  31. Finally someone is online speaking the truth. The automotive press should be ashamed that they perpetuate garbage automotive companies reputation. It is sick..

  32. Oooooohhhh……….that hurts!!!! Especially coming from another Youtuber whose opening statement is "This is a……"

  33. Stop agreeing with him I watched him for a little and I got tired of hearing his crap he’s stupid he thinks cause he’s a mechanic he knows everything I mean he thinks the Toyota Celica is the best car

  34. Scotty has EXPERIENCE.
Scotty has a good level of SMARTS.
And best of all – he is credible and honest.
That's why I pay attention to his channel.

  35. What I hate about car reviews is that they mostly concentrate on how fast it is, how quickly it accelerates, and how many bells and whistles it has. I want to know how roomy it is, how reliable it is, and the real world fuel economy. I don't drive like a maniac, so why would I pick a car based on how maniacs drive it.

  36. Scotty, I need to correct you, those "journalists" that review cars are anything but. Real journalists are people like you that ask relevant questions concerning the car being peddle. Those reviewers are just a little better than parrots.

  37. Most car reviewers focus too much attention on style and gadgets on brand new vehicles.
I'd rather see a review on a vehicle after it's covered a 100k miles, when most of the silly gizmos have stopped working, I want to know how difficult or otherwise it is to carry out maintenance tasks and whether it has a full size spare wheel. I don't care about the heated seats or the three speed headlamp washers.

  38. GM makes the trailblazer
    Every car company make crap
    Toyota Prius crap
    1980 F150 trash
    Nissan Altima garbage
    Subaru head gaskets
    Dodge crap
    5.9 Cummins best

  39. i always type in the year make and model of the car i am looking at in google and youtube followed by "wont" or "noise" or "how to"
if a bunch of results are the same then i know they have an issue.
we were looking at a nissan altima but apparently nissans have a lot of trouble with a timing chain tensioner. the media reviews were all great, but a search of "2016 altima how to" revealed that is a common problem.

  40. All the reviewers say the Dodge 8 speed transmission is great and is the best. I bought one with that trans and it's terrible. It disconnects at times when trying to pick up speed quickly. The Hemi is a great engine though. I would love it with a decent transmission.
