I-Team: Used Cars That Were Damaged As Rental Cars Sold With Clean Records

. YOU BUY A USED CAR WITH A CLEAN REPORT FROM CARFAX AND ASSUME IT’S NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. BUT THE I-TEAM FOUND DOZENS OF RENTAL VEHICLES WHICH HAD BEEN DAMAGED IN THE PAST BUT HAD CLEAN RECORDS. LISA MOLAR INVESTIGATES WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR REPORTING THAT DAMAGE. Reporter: AT THIS AUTO AUCTION, THERE’S A LINE OF CARS THAT NEED LOVE, SOME WITH DINGS AND DENTS. OTHERS CRUMB CRUMPLED. ONE WAS SOLD TO THIS MASSACHUSETTS MAN IN WHAT LOOKS TO BE MINT CONDITION. HE HAS NO IDEA THAT HIS 2017 FORD TRANSIT HAD A FIRE. AND YOU DID YOUR DUE DILIGENCE. YOU LOOKED AT A CARFAX REPORT, RIGHT? YES, I DID. Reporter: A WBZ INVESTIGATION FOLLOWED THAT CAR AND DOZENS OTHER DAMAGED VEHICLES OFF THE LOT AT THE AUTO AUCTION. WHEN WE PLUGGED THEIR VIN NUMBERS IN, MORE THAN A THIRD HAD NO RECORD AT ALL. OTHERS HAVE CARFAXS THAT TELL ONLY HALF THE STORY. THE COMMON THREAD, THEY WERE ALL OWNED BY ENTERPRISE RENTAL CARS. THE FLEETS TYPICALLY TURN OVER FAIRLY REGULARLY. Reporter: A SPOKESMAN TOLD US WE DON’T SEND DAMAGE INFORMATION TO CARFAX. WE MEET STATE REQUIREMENTS FOR REPORTING DAMAGE. AND CARFAX ACKNOWLEDGED WE GET INFORMATION FROM ENTERPRISE, BUT NOT DAMAGE. EVEN THOUGH ITS WEBSITE STATES IT RECEIVES IT ALL FROM RENTAL COMPANIES. THIS SOUNDS LIKE A LOOPHOLE. THEY SAY THEY’RE GETTING INFORMATION FROM RENTAL COMPANIES, BUT IF ONE OF THE LARGEST RENTAL COMPANIES IS NOT GIVING THE INFORMATION TO CARFAX, THERE SEEMS TO BE A DISCREPANCY. Reporter: AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY LEAVE THE AUCTION LOT, FROM THIS TO THIS. I’M A REPORTER FROM WBZ. I’M TRYING TO FIND OUT IF YOU GUYS BOUGHT IT IN THIS CONDITION AND FIXED IT UP TO LOOK LIKE THAT. DO YOU GUYS BUY DAMAGED VEHICLES AND THEN FIX THEM UP? WE DO. YEAH. Reporter: DO YOU TELL YOUR CUSTOMERS IF THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY DAMAGED? IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT HAPPENED. SOMETIMES IT’S CLEARLY — YOU KNOW, WE HAVE RECORDS OF EVERYTHING THAT WE DO WITH THE CAR. WHATEVER THEY ASK FOR, WE TELL THEM. Reporter: THIS MAN SAYS HE HAD NO REASON TO ASK AND NO TIME OR MONEY TO HAVE AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC CHECK THE CAR. I NEED IT FOR MY BUSINESS AND I DEPEND ON IT. NOW YOU SHOWED ME THIS AND I’M SO, SO DISAPPOINTED ABOUT IT. Reporter: ANY DEALER THAT FAILS TO DISCLOSE RELEVANT INFORMATION OR MISLEADS A BUYER
