Local woman buys used car and it breaks down next day

A WOMAN WHO JUST MOVED TO GEORGIA IS SURPRISED TO FIND OUT THAT THE STATE DOESN’T HAVE A LEMON LAW FOR USED CARS. ANGELA SMITH BOUGHT A CAR FROM A LOCAL DEALERSHIP LAST MONTH AND LESS THAN 24 HOURS LATER, THE CAR BROKE DOWN. MIKE MILLER HAS THE STORY. ANGELA SMITH HAS LIVED IN AUGUSTA FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND RECENTLY, SHE NEEDED TO BUY A CAR FOR HER SON. “WE DECIDED… IN AUGUSTA.” SMITH SAYS SHE AND HER SON FOUND THE PERFECT CAR AT AUTOPLEX. IT WAS A 2006 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER WITH 127,000 MILES FOR ABOUT $15- THOUSAND-DOLLARS. “HE SAID… DOWN IN THERE.” THE NEXT DAY, SMITH SAYS HER SON WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND IT STARTED SMOKING. “SOMETHING FELL… SANDBAR FERRY ROAD.” THE TRANSMISSION BLEW. SMITH HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. FIRST IT WAS BROUGHT TO AUTOPLEX, BUT SHE SAYS THEY TOLD HER SHE BOUGHT IT AS-IS, SO IT WAS UP TO HER INSURANCE AND EXTENDED WARRANTY TO FIX IT. “THEY NEED TO… TO YOUR CONSUMER.” HER CAR IS NOW SITTING AT AN AUGUSTA TOYOTA DEALSERSHIP. SMITH SAYS THE WARRANTY COMPANY HAS BEEN SLOW TO GET THE CAR FIXED. TOYOTA’S MECHANICS SAY IT WILL NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THEY ALSO SAY THE WARRANTY COMPANY HAS BEEN DIFFICULT TO WORK WITH. SMITH SAYS SHE JUST WANTS HER MONEY BACK AND WANTS TO BUY ANOTHER CAR INSTEAD. “ONCE THAT… BECAUSE YOU DON’T TRUST.” IN AUGUSTA MIKE MILLER WJBF NEWS CHANNEL 6. CONSUMER PROTECTION ATTORNEYS SAY IF YOU’RE BUYING A USED CAR, YOU DEFINITELY WANT TO MAKE SURE THERE’S A WARRANTY ON IT. YOU SHOULD ALSO BRING THE CAR TO A TRUSTED MECHANIC TO HAVE IT INSPECTED. IF IT BREAKS DOWN, UNLESS THERE WAS FRAUD INVOLVED IN THE PURCHASE, THE CAR IS YOURS ONCE YOU DRIVE IT OFF THE LOT. CITY ADMINISTRATOR JANICE

  1. Ahhh, u heard a knocking AND U STILL BOUGHT IT????????? There should be a law against STUPID. That dealership is wrong too for lying.

  2. Those extended warranty companies for cars and homes are the biggest scams also because the same assholes that run payday loan companies such as Advanced America operate them.

  3. I find Most people assume because it’s a Toyota it’s gotta be problem free and run well over 200k without anything braking.
U should never buy a used car without a power train warranty from the manufacturer, buy only from a real dealer so you can get the warranty from them.

  4. This lady is confused, so I'm hoping that she reads the comment section here later and hopefully she can gain some understanding. She purchased the vehicle "AS-IS", meaning that she accepted the vehicle with any and all faults, both known and unknown, both current and future. Also the dealer is not required to inspect the car. They are required to file for transfer of title, collecting taxes, but not inspecting the vehicle. The responsibility of inspection falls upon the buyer. If the buyer decides to waive the inspection, she can, but any issues that are found later belong to her, the owner.

Also, she is very lucky, as she had a warranty from a third party to help with the repair. As far as vehicle replacement, she can replace the vehicle, she just has to use the Toyota as a trade-in, I believe that the trade-in value is about $3,980. Of course that's after the transmission is fixed.
