Renault Espace IV MY-2002-2015- buying advice

The fourth generation Renault Espace
was introduced in 2002. Also known as the JK, it was produced until 2015. 13 years, with some changes in between. There were a number of facelifts. Basically it’s the same car. The fourth generation was built
by Renault themselves for the first time. Previously they worked alongside Matra,
using a lot of plastic in the body. With the fourth generation, this is history. The car is completely made of steel,
which makes it heavier as well. Moreover, the Espace… Because it’s a Renault product which
they built themselves for the first time, the first model years had some reliability problems. Two varieties Espace were available:
the normal one and the Grand Espace. The Grand Espace is 20 cm (almost 8 inch) longer,
which benefits the passengers in the back, especially those who sit in
the optional third-row seats. Starting 2012 only the Grand Espace was available. This variety disappeared when
the fifth generation was introduced in 2015. It is more of an crossover / SUV car
with a lot of space inside. It sits higher on the wheels
and has a more unusual design. You can get gasoline and diesel
engines in the Espace. Gasoline engines range from 138-242 hp. Diesel engines range from 118-178 hp. ENGINES
gasoline ENGINES
diesel When looking for an Espace on Marktplaats.nl,
you will find about 240 results for this generation. About 70 have a diesel engine. There are a bit more manual transmissions
than automatic ones, about 55%/45%. When looking for an Espace, you’re looking
at a price tag starting at 1,000 euros for the oldest cars with a lot of miles on the clock. It goes up until 24,000 euros for
the most recent cars, so from last year. I can think of a number of
reasons why to buy an Espace. To begin, space. There is a lot of space with
storage compartments everywhere. Incredible. It is a practical car when you
have a family with 48 kids. 48 may be a bit much, but if you
have 5 kids, you can seat them if you have the optional third row of seats. Moreover, it is a very comfortable
car and a very safe car. It scored high on the Euro NCAP test back then. However, there are things to watch out for. To start, especially the first model
years hit rock bottom in reliability tests. That is something to keep in mind. When choosing an Espace,
try to get one as new as possible, because those had more
development and break less. The last model years are
a lot better and more sturdy. The Espace is not a bad car, but the first
model years are more prone to problems than the more recent versions. It is best to avoid the 2.2 DCI engine. The 2-liter DCI is the best choice
when you want a diesel engine. It is a more modern engine
and breaks down less often. The 2.2 DCI has problems with the EGR valve. The same goes for 1.9 DCI, so keep that in mind. Keep an eye on it. As soon as the engine does not
run smoothly, the EGR valve probably needs replacing. If the turbo breaks, ask the dealer
to check the EGR valve as well. The EGR valve is often the cause
of the problem why the turbo breaks. If you do not fix the EGR valve,
your new turbo will die as well in no time. The clutch and handbrake of
the 4-cylinder diesel engines… There is also a 6-cylinder diesel,
but that one does not have this problem. Those of the 4-cylinder diesel engines break,
so check if the handbrake and clutch work properly. Of course, this only goes
for the manual transmission. Speaking of automatic and manual transmissions:
the AT breaks more often than the average AT. That is because the transmission oil
cooler is integrated with the radiator. That is not done properly. Sometimes, cracks form,
leaking coolant in the transmission oil. The coolant ends up in the
transmission, destroying it. That is a nasty problem, breaking the AT. The valve cover of the 2.2 DCI may warp,
especially when it gets too hot. This can happen with heavy load
in the mountains or with a trailer. When this happens, the exhaust fumes can mix
with the intake system, upsetting the engine. The turbos will be less efficient. Moreover, it can damage the manifold,
which can crack. There is also an electronic problem. Check all electric systems in the Espace,
but I say that in every buying advice video. These things… Test all buttons,
and still it can break. A specific problem for the Espace
is the relay at the brake light. This relay gives the wrong signal
to the electric system, causing the ECU to give less power
or sometimes even stalling the engine. I think you need to graduate in it if you
want to cause it in the electric system, but unfortunately it does happen
with the Renault Espace. Especially with the early model years. Next is the steering lock, which can break,
so check if it works properly. Last, the digital dashboard of the Espace. It looks pretty, but it breaks sometimes. When it really breaks, it will cost you
about 900 euros to buy a new one. I would not recommend that. There are plenty of specialists
who overhaul the dashboards and offer a new unit for 150 euros
if you give them your old one. That is easier on the wallet. The Grand Espace we are driving
today is a 2-liter DCI. The diesel engine you want. It has 173 hp, which makes it powerful. It is quick enough for such a big family hauler. It is the Initiale edition, which makes it
very luxurious. It has all the trimmings. It is a car from 2011. It costs 20,950 euros at
Renault Nieuwendijk in Hillegom. THIS CAR If you’re looking for a second-hand car and want

  9. Renault Espace is the WORST CAR ever when it comes to reliability. I have one and I am going to set it on fire and make a video and post it on YOUTUBE. Stay away from RENAULT and so called french engineers should be taken to the guillotine.
Renault destroys family holidays and vacations because of stranded cars.
