School bus transformed into diner for summer meal program

SCHOOL DISTRICT IS DOING ABOUT IT. MARK: SCHOOL LUNCH REGULATIONS ARE BEING SCALED BACK. ELLIE: THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE IS PREPARING TO ROLL BACK SOME NUTRITION STANDARDS FOR FEDERALLY SUBSIDIZED SCHOOL MEALS. THIS WAS STARTED BY FORMER FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA. SCHOOL NUTRITION DIRECTORS HAVE SAID MANY OF THE CURRENT STANDARDS ARE UNWORKABLE… ARGUING FOR CHANGES TO WHOLE GRAIN AND SODIUM REQUIREMENTS. ELLIE: YOU CAN HEAR MORE ABOUT THE NEW REGULATIONS COMING UP TONIGHT AFTER NBC 4 AT 6… ON NIGHTLY NEWS WITH LESTER HOLT. TOM COSTELLO WILL HAVE MORE ON THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S CHANGES. ELLIE: FOOD INSECURITY IN ROSS COUNTY IS A HUGE PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO AN OHIO POVERTY REPORT… NEARLY 18 PERCENT OF ROSS COUNTY RESIDENTS LIVE IN POVERTY MARK: THAT MEANS THERE ARE A LOT OF CHILDREN WHO CANNOT GET THE MEALS THEY NEED. NBC4’S SHAWN LANIER FOUND OUT A UNIQUE WAY CHILLICOTHE CITY SCHOOLS ARE TRYING TO HELP DURING THE SUMMER. SHAWN: SHAWN LANIER “THEY ARE TRANSFORMING THIS BUS RIGHT HERE INTO A DINER TO HELP FIGHT FOOD INSECURITY AROUND CHILLICOTHE.” JESSICA ISON “TO KNOW THAT THEY’RE GOING TO BE PUTTING A BUS OUT THERE THAT’S FEEDING THESE KIDS THROUGH THE SUMMER WHEN THEY’RE NOT GOING TO BE AT SCHOOL TO EAT THAT REALLY TOUCHES MY SOUL. IT MAKES ME HAPPY.” STARTING NEXT MONTH… THIS SCHOOL BUS WILL BE FULL OF CHILDREN ENJOYNG A FREE MEAL. SO THE RULES OF NO EATING AND DRINKING ON THIS BUS DON’T APPLY. IT’S BECAUSE OF THE FOOD INSECURITY ISSUE IN CHILLICOTHE. THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE THINK THIS IS A PERFECT SOLUTION. JESSICA ISON “I KNOW A LOT OF LITTLE GIRLS AND BOYS EVEN WHO ARE PRE-SCHOOL AGE THAT MY KIDS COME HOME AND SAY THESE KIDS DON’T EAT UNLESS THEY’RE AT SCHOOL MOMMY WHY IS THAT.” JENNIFER HENDERSON “I HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS THAT ARE STRUGGLING, AND THAT HAVE THREE FOUR KIDS AND ARE SINGLE PARENTS. I THINK SOMETHING LIKE THIS WOULD BE VERY BENEFICIAL IN HELPING THEM.” ACCORDING TO THE FEEDING AMERICA MEAL GAP MAP FROM 2014, 45- HUNDRED CHILDREN LIVE IN FOOD INSECURE HOMES IN ROSS COUNTY. THE SUPERINTENDANT OF CHILLICOTHE CITY SCHOOLS SAYS THAT’S A PROBLEM. JON SAXTON “WE DON’T JUST CARE ABOUT OUR KIDS WHEN THEY’RE WITH US AND IN SCHOOL. WE CARE ABOUT THEM ALL THE TIME ALL YEAR LONG.” SO DURING JUNE AND JULY THIS BUS WILL GO TO 5 LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE CITY. THE HOPE — THAT HUNGRY CHILDREN WILL FILL THESE SEATS AND HAVE THE CHANCE TO FILL THEIR STOMACHS WITH THE FOOD THEY NEED. MARY MONTGOMERY “IT’S JUST OPEN TO ALL THE KIDS IN OUR COMMUNITY. ANYONE THAT WOULD EAT A LUNCH YOU KNOW HAS THAT OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE THAT LUNCH FOR THE DAY.” SHAWN LANIER “THE NEXT STEP IS TO FIND THE 5 LOCATIONS THIS WILL BE TO TO HELP FIGHT FOOD INSECURITY IN THIS CITY. IN CHILLICOTHE SHAWN LANIER NBC4.”
